Overview
Ten perfect days in Oman allow you to see the entire country from an incredible perspective of "off road." You will truly get to know the back roads, small towns and people of this magical land. Remember this is only a recommended or sample itinerary, so feel free to share your thoughts with us and we will create the ideal tour for you.
| Day One: Arrive Muscat Arrival at the Muscat International Airport with a "meet and greet" at the airport by our representative. (Most flights from North America arrive in the evening. If you have an earlier arrival we will be pleased to plan a more comprehensive day.) |
Day Two: Muscat Morning half-day Muscat city tour: The tour begins by driving through the beautiful embassy quarter of Muscat en route to Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Visit the mosque - splendour of unique Islamic architecture (Islamic dress code to be observed). Next we drive, via the old pass road to the former capital of Oman, the old town of Muscat. Walk along the wall of H.H. the Sultan's Palace and see the 16th century Portuguese-built forts Jalali and Mirani standing guard at the mouth of the harbor. Continue to Bait Al Zubair and view the extensive Omani jewellery collection and costumes worn by women from the different regions of Oman. Then on to Muttrah Corniche, a delightful quarter of Muscat, complete with traditional souk and fish market. Stroll along the Corniche to see the beautiful merchant houses and then on to shopping in the busy souk, well known for its silver craft shops, perfumes and souvenirs. | |
| Day Three: Rustaq Full Day Rustaq Sightseeing: The tour starts with a visit to the fish market and souk in Barka as well as a visit of Bait Na'am, a fortified house where the Imams used to overnight during their journey to the interior. From Barka the drive continues along the famous Batinah plain, the main agricultural area of Oman. Then on to Al Hazm, the impressive fort before stopping for a photo at the Rustaq Fort. The tour passes along picturesque wadis (dry river beds) and we reach the oasis of Nakhl with time for a visit of Nakhl Fort. Before returning to Muscat we visit the natural warm springs of Thowarah. |
Day Four: Nizwa - Bat - Al Ayn Muscat-Nizwa - Bat - Al Ayn Off road trip (4WD): We start early in the morning with a spectacular drive beside the Hajar Mountains via the oases of Fanjah and Birkat Al Mauz to reach Nizwa, the most important town in the Omani interior. We will also stop at Jabreen Castle and Bahla famous for its potteries. | |
| Day Five: Nizwa - Ibra - Wahiba - Wadi Bani Khalid - Sur Nizwa- Ibra- Wahiba - Wadi Bani Khalid- Sur (4WD): This morning we visit the impressive 17th century Nizwa fort and then on to the souk, famous for its Bedouin silver jewellery. We continue the journey through the fascinating Hajar Mountains and the town of Sinaw and Ibra. Enroute we stop at the village of Mudairib to see its traditional watchtowers and then proceed to Wahiba desert for an exciting dune drive. |
Day Six: Wadi Shab - Muscat Full day Wadi Shab - Muscat (4WD): This morning we visit the Sur dhow yard and Sur Fort, Sunaysilah Castle. Then proceed to Muscat through the partly off road track along the coast. We make a stop at the archaeological site of Bibi Myriam tomb at Qalhat. The next destination is Tiwi and the picturesque Wadi Shaab with time to wander around its lush vegetation. We continue on the off road track for a photo-stop at the 'Sinkhole'; part of a mountain that has collapsed and filled with Seawater. Proceed to Quriyat, famous for its beautiful beaches (shark beach) for a photo stop. From here you take the tarmac road to Muscat. | |
| Day Seven: Muscat - Salalah - Dhofar In the morning proceed to Seeb International Airport Muscat to fly Muscat-Salalah. |
Day Eight: Salalah Morning Half Day Salalah Sightseeing: Discover the Capital of Dhofar by visiting the historic port area of the town before proceeding to Al Baleed port and Salalah Museum. We will walk past the residence of H. M Sultan Qaboos, the Al Hosn Palace and arrive at the Frankincense Souk where the fragrances of the Orient come together. Then on to a visit of the Central Market with its buzzing and lively atmosphere | |
| Day Nine: Ubar - Rub Al Khali Full Day Ubar and Rub Al Khali (4WD): The famous excavation site of Ubar (located in Shisr village) is our first destination. To reach this former flourishing trading Centre for frankincense we drive north, pass the Dhofar Check Point and cross the Nejd Area, home of the best frankincense in Dhofar. From Ubar / Shisr continue to the desert and enjoy an exciting drive through the spectacular desert dunes of Khadaf at the outskirts of Rub Al Khali, The Empty Quarter. After a picnic lunch we will return to Salalah through the beautiful Wadi Sahanwoot. |
Day Ten: Dhofar - Salalah Departure Morning Western Dhofar Tour: This tour drives across the northern part of the impressive Qara mountains and heads south, where the mountains are greener, to reach Hiob's Tomb visited by Islamic pilgrims. We return to Salalah via the famous frankincense road that leads to the border of Yemen, where we will stop for photos among the frankincense trees. After visiting Mughsail Beach, renowned for its blow holes, our tour returns to Salalah to prepare for our departure. | |
